South from Silverdale return over Heald Brow and Woodwell Cliff.
Start. Silverdale.
Route. Silverdale - Lindeth Road - Gibraltar Farm - Jack Scout - Jenny Brown's Point - Brown's Houses - Heald Brow - Hollins Lane - Woodwell Cliff - The Chase - Silverdale Green - Emesgate Lane - Silverdale.
Notes. Silverdale is one of the most beautiful coastal areas in Lancashire, it’s almost secretive passed by most walkers on their way to higher, harder adventures further north, but those few that know it return again and again. So here I am again.
The tide was well in as I rolled into Silverdale, it had been raining on the drive down but had stopped, eager to get started I left my coat in the car boot, oops. First over the tarmac surface of Lindeth Road I walked, at the Wolf House I swung right to join a narrow lane that ushered me passed Gibraltar Farm and Lindeth Tower, further down the lane a kissing gate allowed access to Jack Scout.
Jack Scout at the right time of year is a stunning place to while away a few hours, secluded paths and hidden ways lead down to pebble beaches, views over Morecambe Bay are stunning and for the birders amongst you, there’s loads to see. I slowly wandered above the cliffs and coves before emerging onto the lane I left earlier, this narrow ribbon of tarmac then guided me round Jenny Brown’s Point before terminating at the Brown’s Houses.
After walking passed the Brown’s Houses and Smelt Mill Chimney I set foot on sea washed turf, a green trod then guided me to a real mire, the path was flooded, a short diversion to the left was called for, this lead to the foot of Heald Brow. After a sharp ascent a green trod guided me through fields into a small cops behind a field barn, here I joined a walled path that in turn deposited me on Hollins Lane dead opposite the path over Woodwell Cliff.
Two paths start here, one cuts under the cliffs and visits the pool and spring, the one I opted to follow runs above the cliff over exposed tree roots and limestone passing through a small sheep pasture before a narrow trod terminates at The Chase. From the high walls of The Chase I strolled through Silverdale Green, I then followed field paths behind rows of smart properties, joined a narrow lane that ran behind the church, this lane ejected me onto Emesgate Lane, I turned left and wandered up the hill back into Silverdale.
